Non-Leather Shoe Guide Updated for 2000

Are you a frustrated vegetarian who loves shoes, but can't find any decent non-leather options? Vegetarian Resource Group tracked down manufacturers, mail order companies, and retailers that carry non-leather dress shoes, work boots, running shoes, hiking shoes, and even ballet shoes!

For the 2000 update of A Shopper's Guide to Leather Alternatives more vegan mail order catalogues have been added, such as Planet V, Veganline, and Vegan Wears. Information for existing companies now includes websites, e-mail addresses, and new product lines. New products were discovered that might be of interest, such as non-leather bowling shoes, skate shoes, and ballet shoes.

The Shopper's Guide to Leather Alternatives now lists fifteen all-vegan mail order companies across the globe to choose from. You might wish to order some warm winter boots from Aesop, Inc. (PO Box 315, N. Cambridge, MA 02140; (617) 628-8030; www.aesopinc.com), or perhaps a "James Dean Style" non-leather jacket from Pangea (7829 Woodmont Ave., Bethesda, MD 20814; (301) 652-3181; www.veganstore.com), or maybe a non-leather baseball glove from Heartland Products, Ltd. (PO Box 218, Dakota City, IA 50529; (800) 441-4692; trvnet.net/~hrtlndp/). If you need non-leather ballet shoes you will find them at Vegan Wares in Australia (78 Smith St., Collingwood, 3066 VIC Australia; (03) 9417 0230; www.veganwares.com). If you are looking for shoes that state your beliefs upfront head to England for Vegetarian Shoes (12 Gardner St., Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 1UP, United Kingdom; 011-44-1-273-691913; www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk).

Many of the companies now have websites, which you can order from directly. This brings vegan businesses closer to home and makes supporting them easier than ever.

The guide lists contact information for catalogs, companies, and stores with leather alternatives. Other sections include Athletic Shoes, Work Boots, Hiking Shoes, Dress Shoes, Coats and Jackets, and Bags, Belts, and Wallets. There is also a section on specialty items, such as bowling shoes, skate shoes, rock climbing shoes, and tool belts. Information is given for children, men, and women where available.

To order the 8-page A Shopper's Guide to Leather Alternatives, send $4.00 to The Vegetarian Resource Group, P.O. Box 1463, Baltimore, MD 21203. You can also order online at www.vrg.org/catalog/order.htm or call (410) 366-8343 to order over the phone with a Visa or MasterCard.
