The Vegetarian Resource Group has commissioned national polls since 1994 to find out how many Americans are vegetarian or vegan. In 1994 we stated, “We can be 95% sure that 0.3% to 1% of the population is vegetarian.” In 2006 2.3% of Americans were vegetarian and 1.4% were vegan. By 2012 we reported that 3% of the US population was vegetarian and another 1% was vegan. In 2019 4% of Americans were vegetarian and 2% were vegan. Finally, in a poll commissioned this year (2022), 3% of the US population is vegetarian and another 3% is vegan. Please keep in mind that when VRG commissions national polls we ask the following question:
Please tell us which of the following foods, if any, you never eat:
- Meat
- Poultry
- Fish or Seafood
- Dairy Products
- Eggs
- Honey
