GUIDE TO VEGETARIAN RESTAURANTS IN THE U.S. AND CANADA

The Vegetarian Resource Group and The Avery Publishing Group have released the second edition of Vegetarian Journal's Guide to Natural Foods Restaurants in the U.S. and Canada. Featured are over 2,000 restaurants, juice bars, delicatessens, vacation spots, and more.

Whether you crave gourmet, unique, or quick food, this guide is the perfect traveling companion coast to coast and inbetween. Looking for a place to take important clients in Seattle? Try Cafe Flora. Enjoy good service and sample creative dishes like Sage Pappardelle with Wild Mushrooms or Oaxaca Tacos. Searching for a relaxed 60's atmosphere? Visit the Globe Cafe and Bakery. This funky coffeehouse is self service and has monthly art shows, poetry readings, and hefty, inexpensive portions. Food is vegan (no meat, fish, fowl, dairy, or eggs).

Hankering for Chinese food in Canada and a smoke free environment? In Vancouver vegetarian Chinese restaurants include Bodai Vegetarian Restaurant, Evergreen, Miu Jay Garden and Bo-Jik. Choose from dishes like Chili Bean Curd, Lo-Hon Mixed Vegetables, or Vegetarian Corn Soup. Searching for a healthy breakfast? Circling Dawn offers eggless French Toast, eggless pancakes, and more.

Are you the adventurous type? Idaho Afloat accommodates vegetarians on white water rafting trips. The Biking Expedition has bike tours in New Hampshire featuring vegetarian dishes as an option at every meal. Figaro Cruises offers sailing cruises along the Maine coast for health-minded folks. There are even two travel agents who specialize in booking trips for vegetarians: Environmental Travel in Kew Gardens, New York, and Donna Zeigfinger (Always Travel) in Bethesda, Maryland.

Traveling in the Midwest? Unique restaurants in Chicago include Soul Vegetarian and The Chicago Diner. Taste Vegetarian Ribs and Chickenless Noodle Soup. Herbivores in Kansas offers Tempeh Reuben Sandwiches, Lentil Burgers, and Veggie Burritos.

Prefer big cities in the East? In New York you could eat out at a different restaurant every day. Angelica's Kitchen uses 95 percent organic ingredients. The Apple Restaurant features Karaoke sing-a-long and natural food choices like Yam tempura, Stir-Fried Cabbage, Soba Noodles, and BBQ Seitan. The Natural Gourmet Cookery School's Friday Night Dinner Club features meals which are sugar- and dairy-free, high in fiber, and low in fat.

Restaurants which say they are kosher include B & H Dairy Restaurant and the Mizrachi Kosher Dairy Restaurant with a fresh salad bar, sandwiches, and homemade soups. Madras Mahal advertises as vegetarian/Indian/kosher!

Down in the Washington, D.C. area try the Olney Ale House which offers a fireplace during the winter, chili, vegetarian burgers, and homemade bread. Further south in New Orleans celebrate at Jack Sprat's Vegetarian Grill or Old Dog New Trick. Enjoy traditional Red Beans and Rice without the meat.
