LIST OF VEGETARIAN FOODS AVAILABLE IN INSTITUTIONAL SIZES

The Vegetarian Resource Group has produced a list of over 140 companies which offer vegetarian items for schools, restaurants, hospitals, and other institutions. These businesses produce meatless foods in large serving sizes which are easy to use by food services.

This list is a valuable resource for any chef who wants to serve more meatless meals, or any consumer who wants to let their favorite eating spot know about healthy foods they can offer.

Product listings vary from baked goods, beans, and breads; to soups, soy products, and special diets. Food services looking to add meatless options for their customers can choose from vegetarian burgers distributed by Green Giant, Boca Burger, Fantastic, or Wholesome and Hearty Gardenburger. Or select a nonfat meatless hot dog from Lightlife Foods. Special products include soy yogurt from White Wave or dairy free frozen desserts from J.M. Smucker Company, Imagine Foods, or Tofutti Brands.

For breakfast, vegetarian breakfast links are available from Morningstar Farms; New Morning supplies organic cereals; and Van's sells eggless waffles. For those looking to serve the ever popular pasta, twelve companies are listed. Order from nationally known Borden, or seek out new items like vegan stuffed shells from Casa Di Bertacchi Corporation, or organic, stone ground pasta from Cemac Foods Corporation.

Companies are listed by topic and in alphabetical order. Each listing includes the company name, address, phone number, and products available. Also included in the handout are four meatless quantity recipes which serve 24: Fruited Stuffed Green Peppers, Russian Sauerkraut Soup, Wayne's Tofu Chili, and Lentil Soup.

To order the 28-page healthy Product Listing for institutions, send $3 to Product Listing, The Vegetarian Resource Group, P.O. Box 1463, Baltimore, MD 21203.

Vegetarianism is the abstinence of meat, fish, and fowl. Vegans are vegetarians who also do not use other animal products such as eggs or dairy. The Vegetarian Resource Group is a non-profit organization which educates the public about vegetarianism and veganism. It publishes the quarterly Vegetarian Journal's Foodservice Update newsletter ($5 per year for members; $20 for nonmembers). For more information on vegetarianism, send a self addressed stamped envelope to VRG, Box 1463, Baltimore, MD 21203.
