TRAVELING WITH VEGETARIAN CHILDREN

Traveling with vegetarian children can be fun, but challenging. Generally speaking, young children do best with familiar foods when they are in an unfamiliar setting. If they always eat the crackers that come in the blue box, tuck in a box of the crackers. If you don't, it's guaranteed you'll only be able to find "yucky" crackers in a red box. Older children, and some young children may be more adventurous.

In the current Vegetarian Journal's Family Matters newsletter, Reed Mangels, Ph.D., R.D. gives tips for traveling with vegan children plus information about the "Unsung Superstar: Your Liver." Also featured is a bibliography of "Young People's Books with Vegetarian Themes." Your child might enjoy Eating the Alphabet, Leprechaun Cake and Other Tales by Vonnie Crist, Bambi, or The Great Kapok Tree about the importance of the rain forests.

Carol Coughlin, R.D. tells you how to share vegetarianism with family and friends, while JoAnn Farb gives food ideas for toddlers. Try her recipes for Green Potatoes, Chapati Roll-Ups, and a Tofu Bagel Spread.

"Biker Babe" Ann Wiegand tells her story about being a teenage vegetarian. Ann is winner of TheVegetarian Resource Group annual essay contest in the 14 to 18 year old category. She wears cotton instead of leather and eats mushrooms and tomatoes instead of steak and potatoes. She cleans her dad's '96 800 Suzuki Intruder with a friendly bike cleaner.
