YIDDISH COOKING VIDEO WITHOUT THE CHICKEN FAT
LOWFAT JEWISH VEGETARIAN RECIPES
Roland Millman has produced No Shmaltz, a Yiddish cooking video with English subtitles. My Yiddisheh Cooking Video contains recipes like bubby (a Jewish grandmother) would make, but without the shmaltz (chicken fat).
Actors of the Yiddish stage, Shifra Lerer and Hy Wolfe, explain and prepare nine delicious recipes from Debra Wasserman’s The Lowfat Jewish Vegetarian Cookbook. No Shmaltz is a 30-minute collection of easy-to-prepare international Jewish recipes, from knishes to eggless matzo balls to chickenless soup.
No Shmaltz is designed as an instructional video you can follow in your own kitchen. Traditional Jewish songs and humor make your culinary lessons fun. This video is a creative way to learn the Yiddish language and vegetarian cooking at the same time. Both 20-year olds and senior citizens smile as Shifra Lerer (who recently appeared in Woody Allen’s film Deconstructing Harry) and Hy Wolfe explain in Yiddish how to make nine healthy recipes. Non-Yiddish speakers will be glad to learn that English subtitles are also provided.
No Shmaltz is an enjoyable video and can be purchased from The Vegetarian Resource Group for $27 including postage and handling. Send a check to VRG, P.O. Box 1463, Baltimore, MD 21203 or call (410) 366-8343. Also available from The Vegetarian Resource Group is The Lowfat Jewish Vegetarian Cookbook (150 recipes, 224 pages) for $15 including shipping.
