Notes from The VRG Scientific Department
The Vegetarian Resource Group in the News
Vegetarian Resource Group Nutrition Advisor Reed Mangels, PhD, RD, was one of the experts quoted in "Busted: Top Vegan Nutrition Myths," an article by Nil Zacharias that appeared in The Huffington Post (available at <www.huffingtonpost.com/nil-zacharias/vegan-nutrition-myths_b_949288.html>). Reed answered questions about the safety of a vegan diet for infants and children. In addition, Reed granted interviews about vegetarian children to both Boston Parents Paper and the Diets in Review website, and she spoke to Family Circle about vegan teenagers.
Reed and VRG contributor Julia Driggers, RD, co-authored an article titled "The Youngest Vegetarians: Vegetarian Infants and Toddlers" for ICAN: Infant, Child, & Adolescent Nutrition, a pediatric nutrition journal. The article appeared online first and then in a print edition.
VEGAN Outreach
Vegetarian Resource Group Food Service Advisor Nancy Berkoff, RD, EdD, CCE, worked with a team from a local Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Southern California to coordinate meals for the Dalai Lama, his staff, and approximately 1,500 audience members when he gave a public presentation in Long Beach, CA, on April 21. Also, in February, Nancy teamed with several California chefs to do a seminar on chocolate, and they incorporated vegan chocolate recipes into the demonstrations.
The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, used a web capture of VRG's restaurant webpage in a display case that talks about how people use websites to find the information they need to enhance their travel experiences.
