Hospital Cafeteria Serves Vege Food in Honor of World Vegetarian Day -
October 1st
Congratulations to Lesa M. Sherwood, a chef at North Kansas City Hospital in
Missouri, for featuring vegetarian food in the hospital's employee and visitor
cafeteria last year in honor of World Vegetarian Day (held October 1st of each
year). Items that were available included Nature Burgers, Garbanzo Patties with
Mushroom Sauce, and Hot and Sour Soup (recipes they obtained from The Vegetarian
Resource Group's Quantity Recipe Packet), Vegetable Pesto Pizzas, Soba Noodle Salad,
Steamed Vegetables, Brown Rice Salad, Cut Fruit, Ten Bean Soup, and Fruit Shakes.
Over 200 individuals sampled the food, and Ms. Sherwood received several phone calls, including one from a physician expressing appreciation for her work that day. Copies of Vegetarianism in a Nutshell (published by The Vegetarian Resource Group) were handed out.
Chicago Vegetarian Society Sponsors Vegetarian Thanksgiving
Dinner
Over 600 people enjoyed a vegan Thanksgiving dinner last year at the Hyatt Regency
Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The meal, which included items such as vegetarian pate,
butternut squash chowder, steamed greens, a seitan entree, and two different
desserts, was prepared by Brother Ron Pickarski and sponsored by The Chicago
Vegetarian Society. Jo Kaucher, owner/chef of the well-known Chicago Diner, assisted
Brother Ron in the preparation of the dinner. Numerous retailers and restaurants
supported the event, which was considered a big success.
It's not too late for groups and individuals to plan a vegetarian dinner in their community. The meal can be as elaborate as the one described above or as simple as a potluck dinner held in someone's home. If you need ideas, call The Vegetarian Resource Group at (410) 366-8343.
