VRG in the News
Nutrition Advisor Suzanne Havala was interviewed for upcoming articles about
vegetarian foods for Food and Wine magazine and Natural Health, as
well as for a chapter in a new book by Rodale Press. She was also interviewed for a
story about diets in developing countries for Nutrition Week.
Summerfest 1999
Johnstown, Pennsylvania was the site of the North American Vegetarian Society's
Annual Summerfest conference, which draws several hundred participants from around
the northeast and beyond. The conference was held the second week of July. This
year, VRG Nutrition Advisor Suzanne Havala presented five sessions for attendees,
ranging from vegetarian nutrition basics to career options in vegetarian dietetics.
VRG also distributed several hundred copies of the Vegetarian Journal and
other nutrition education materials to conference participants.
VRG Presents at National Aging Services Conference
Dietitian Catherine Conway of the New York City Department for the Aging gave two
presentations describing the implementation of the National Meals on Wheels
Foundation/Vegetarian Resource Group vegetarian menu initiative at the annual
meeting of the National Association for Nutrition and Aging Services Programs
(NANASP) in Chicago the week of June 24th. At the meeting, Cathy described her
efforts at incorporating vegetarian meal options into the menus at 25 congregate
meal sites and homebound meal programs that she supervises for the Department
throughout New York City. Cathy shared tips for successfully working with meal
participants, foodservice, and program staff to improve the nutritional profile of
meals by adding such meatless entr?es as vegetarian chili, spinach lasagna,
tofu-stuffed shells, bean burritos, and veggie burgers to menus.
