My name is Emma, and I have been interning at The VRG this spring. It has been a pleasure to work with everyone at The VRG and to see how much vegetarianism means to so many people out there. I will surely take the learning experiences with me. I hope you have enjoyed our services and continue to support The Vegetarian Resource Group. Enjoy! ************************************************************************ 2. VRG LUNCH AT THAI LANDING IN BALTIMORE SUNDAY, JUNE 23, 2013 Thai Landing at 1207 N. Charles Street in Baltimore has created a new vegetarian menu after 20 years in operation. The Vegetarian Resource Group is sponsoring a vegan lunch at Thai Landing on Sunday June 23 at 2 pm with the following menu. All dishes contain no fish sauce, and they said they will moderate the spice level of dishes. (However, everyone has a different notion of spices. So if you are sensitive to spices or have to have a lot of spices, you may want to go at another time.) They will be serving family style on the second floor. There are steps. Menu subject to change. Thank you to Mark Rifkin, RD for organizing this dinner, and for attendees who want to support restaurants adding vegan options. VEGAN MENU Som Tam (Thai Papaya Salad with peanut dressing) Pad Kra Prao (Tofu, fresh basil, carrots, string beans, bamboo shoots, and a little hot pepper) Roti Massaman Pak (Chick peas with cauliflower, zucchini, carrots, potatoes, and peanuts simmered in coconut milk with mild curry) Pad Woon Sen (Vegan soy chicken with stir-fried tofu, bean thread noodles, baby corn, mushrooms, onions, snow peas, bean sprouts, and green onions) Tofu with Mushroom Pad Khing (Stir fried tofu with ginger, black mushrooms, button mushrooms, baby corn, snow peas, carrots and onions) Rice COST: $25, which includes tax and tip. You must prepay by June 13th. Seating is limited. Send $25 per person with names of attendees to The Vegetarian Resource Group, P.O. Box 1463, Baltimore, MD 21203; Call (410) 366-8343 with a credit card Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, or pay online at [ http://www.vrg.org/donate ]. VRG BOOTH AT KALE-A-RAMA 2013 By Whitney Blomquist This April I had the opportunity to work a booth for The Vegetarian Resource Group at the first ever Kale-A-Rama Festival. It was a perfect sunny day for the premier of this kale themed event in Greenbelt, Maryland. We had the pleasure of being placed right beside Everlasting Life's Food Truck, which stayed busy all day, sending customers on their way with delicious garlic kale salad and vegan mac and cheese. Everyone and everything was decorated with kale. There was kale ice cream, kale smoothies, kale chips, and best of all kale doughnuts that were surprisingly fantastic. My parents and I conversed with people who were already vegan, along with some that were beginning their vegan journey. Our visitors all had in depth questions and positive feedback about how much they enjoy the vegan lifestyle. We spoke with a few athletes that were looking for ways to pack on muscle and a woman who had successfully lost 25 pounds and was able to stop using her cholesterol medicine. There were several parents who were successfully raising vegan children and a man that studies the effects of GMO products. As always, we shared useful information with everyone and, in return, received info we could share with others in the future. Kale-A-Rama was an enjoyable festival that brought vegans together to discuss animal rights issues, listen to music, eat good food, and network with people that share similar beliefs. Events like Kale-A-Rama allow The Vegetarian Resource Group to distribute resources and establish connections with people throughout the country. It is important that VRG has a presence at similar events around the nation. VRG relies on volunteers to make this happen. If you are interested in volunteering at a VRG booth at an event in your community, email [email protected]. LIQUID EARTH REVIEW by Emma Malone I recently went out for a night in downtown Baltimore and stopped in for dinner at Liquid Earth, a cafe not a block down the street from the heart of Fells Point. To say the least, I really enjoyed the experience. My boyfriend, who is not a vegetarian, ordered the Tofu Reuben and thought it was fantastic. I ordered the vegan Filly Cheese Fake and loved it. The tofu was perfectly prepared on whole wheat Italian bread and served with a delicious combination of toppings, including vegan "cheese and "mayonnaise" as well as pickles, hots, lettuce, and tomato. Our smoothies were also wonderful- we actually enjoyed them so much that we decided a juicer is going to be our next purchase (still much anticipated!). I definitely recommend trying this place out if you haven't already. If our meals are any indication for the rest of the menu, the dishes are top notch and can all be served vegan. Liquid Earth's menu is true to its roots, still committing themselves to local fresh produce and products and offering dishes that follow their high standard for intelligent eating. They have been around since 1996 when under the name of "Sacred Grounds." Still located at 1626 Aliceanna St Baltimore, MD 21231 just east of S Broadway, they prepare everything themselves in house to ensure control of their product, and they stick to natural ingredients- as their website says from "the actual items not from a jar, bottle, or can." Lots of local artists' paintings and sculptures are on display, hearkening back to Liquid Earth's earlier days when they used to host experimental music night. (I wish they could bring that back!) This makes for a very comfortable and compelling dining experience. The bar inside makes me think Renaissance apothecary- everything wooden from the floor to the shelves lined jars of healthful spices, extracts, and other ingredients for their fresh juices and smoothie elixirs. Some of the entres offered at Liquid Earth include their Ground Soy Tacos, Tofu Club with avocado, Tofu Salad Sandwich, Meatless Muffaletta, Veggie Burger, Chipwich, and a Not Ham Sandwich. They also have a raw menu which includes Zucchini Spaghetti, Seaweed Salad, a Raw Taco, and Raw Sushi. In addition to the extensive vegan and raw food menus, Liquid Earth has an even longer menu of fresh juices and smoothies. Again, everything can be made vegan for a $1.50 extra- vegetarian dishes with cheese or sauce can be substituted with vegan cheese or sauce, and the smoothies can be made with either soy milk or hemp milk if they aren't already. The service there was also quite good. We didn't make it to Liquid Earth until a little after 6 and though they close at 7 we were invitingly greeted, seated, and served, and the staff was all very kind to us. We were able to secure the big booth in the nook in the back which was surrounded with local art and gave the feeling of being in an old tavern with the aged furnace-like bricks and thick wooden table. Liquid Earth also has a courtyard seating for those who enjoy sitting outside. I hope to make it back again soon- great place and fantastic food! Liquid Earth also does catering. TAX FREE IRA DISTRIBUTIONS The rule allowing tax free IRA distributions of up to $100,000 if donated to charity is retroactively extended through 2013. The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA) extended the qualified charitable distribution (QCD) provisions for 2012 and 2013. A qualified charitable distribution is an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA (other than an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA) owned by an individual who is age 70 or over that is paid directly from the IRA to a qualified charity (for example, The Vegetarian Resource Group). An IRA owner can exclude from gross income up to $100,000 of a qualified charitable distribution made for a year, and a qualified charitable distribution can be used to satisfy any IRA required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year. Also, the amount of a qualified charitable distribution excluded from gross income is not taken into account in determining any deduction for charitable contributions. For individual financial advice or legal advice, please speak with your financial or legal advisor. ************************************************************************ 13.
