6) A NIGHT OUT AT GREAT SAGE
BY IVY GROB
If everyone had a dinner like I had at Great Sage, I have no doubt that the
entire world would become vegan immediately. Great Sage is an all vegan and
organic gourmet restaurant located in Clarksville, MD; just a quick hop away
from Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Frederick and worth every second of the
drive. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, with no need to dress over
the top to match the menu items. The décor is impressive and serene, with
even the patio dining area decorated with gorgeous plants and flowers. Everything
on the menu sounded too good to be true, and I was filled with what my sister
calls the “vegan disease” of going to an all vegan restaurant and wanting
to try too many things that you end up not knowing where to begin. The final
decision was the Hearts of Palm “Crab Cake” for me, and the French Onion
Lentil Burger and Sabrosa Tacos for my aunt, Cassie, and my boyfriend, Justin.
Also ordered was a Watermelon Mojito for Cassie and a Pierogie Quesadilla
to split. I was delighted at first glance of our appetizer. The quesadilla
was filled with sweet potatoes and sauerkraut and grilled to perfection, an
unlikely combination that turned out incredible. I had high hopes that our
entrees would be just as good, and I was not disappointed. The “Crab Cake”
was hearty and the fibrous texture of the palm hearts was complimented by
the smooth tangy sauce and arugula garnish on top. The other meals were just
as delicious if not better, especially the Warmed Potato Salad that came with
the Lentil Burger. The presentation of the food alone was beautiful and every
bite far exceeded all expectations. Even though we were all stuffed, we had
to order dessert. The Sin Tres Leche and Petite Coconut Lime Pie Pudding truly
were the cherry on top for the entire meal. Both were decadent and rich, and
satisfying enough to scrape the strawberry sauce off the plate. I was blown
away by my entire experience at Great Sage, a restaurant that proves with
great food and good company, you can make veganism gourmet.

8) LIQUID EARTH CAFE
BY ANNE CUSTER
This weekend I ventured down to Fells Point during the early afternoon to
walk around and check out Liquid Earth Café.
I made the drive and found a place to park after about twenty minutes. I am
still not used to city driving or parking (more on that later.) I made my
way to the café walking along the cobblestone streets. Located a few doors
down from Subway on Aliceanna Street, this quaint café was busy even at that
time in the afternoon. I browsed the menu and placed my order to-go. The service
was very friendly and I didn’t have to wait too long for my food. I sat
at the bar watching the woman make the many orders of juices. It was fascinating
to see the fresh ingredients be pressed to make a delectable, nutritious drink.
Their operation is a well-oiled machine! There were only three people working,
but the café was running smoothly and everyone seemed to be enjoying their
meal.
I ordered the Fruit-Tea juice made with green iced tea, ginger, apple, pear
and lemon. It was quite refreshing and made the wait more enjoyable. Once
my sandwich was ready, I left the café to find a parking ticket tucked under
my windshield wiper. I decided after eating my sandwich that it was worth
the hassle and the hefty fine. I enjoyed a Liquid Earth Club: organic vegan
bacon, field greens, red onions, tomatoes, sprouts, avocado, and Nayonnaise
all neatly stacked on toasted multigrain bread. It was perfect to say the
least. The bacon crunched under the bed of vegetables smothered in creamy
avocado and vegan mayonnaise. I had to wrap the sandwich up and put it in
the backseat to avoid eating it all in the ride back. I wanted to at least
look at it before I completely inhaled my meal.
My lunch at Liquid Earth left me hydrated, satisfied, and provided me with
the sustainable energy I needed for the rest of the day. It left me curious
as to what else was on their menu and what I could try next. I went for the
club at first glance because when I wasn’t a vegan, that was one of my favorite
sandwiches. This beats any sandwich with meat, at least in my humble
opinion. I went on Yelp, a popular site to review and research all types of
businesses, to find out other popular menu options. Apparently, the Filly
Cheese Steak and Rueben are worth going back for and I believe it!
