2) NOTES FROM THE VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

By Emilio Gironda

A few short months ago I took over the reigns as the Volunteer Coordinator here at The Vegetarian Resoure Group. Once I got a feel for the job and its responsibilities my first big project has been recruiting and coordinating readers for the college scholarship contest. Much to my delight, I have discovered a group of wonderful volunteers who have given their time and expertise to read over the nearly 300 essays we received. Coming from my background in the for-profit-world, it is good to be reminded just how many people are dedicated to something more than the bottom line. In addition, not only do I get to work with such selfless people, I get to read essays from the future of the movement. Particularly in times of crisis, it is reassuring to see that our future is in good hands. But big picture, I am inspired to be a part, however small, of a bigger vision of compassion for the world and all sentient beings. I am reminded of a favorite quote from Wisdom of the Jewish Sages: A Modern Reading of Pirke Avot by Rabbi Rami Shapiro:

"You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.
Do not be daunted
by the enormity of the world's grief.
Do justly now,
Love mercy, now,
Walk humbly, now.

If you attend to Reality
you will receive great reward:
for effort itself is good fortune."

Thank you all for your inspiration and for your good works and I hope that I can live up to the model.

11) VRG HIGHLIGHTS

Along with the help of a large cast of volunteer readers, we continue to review and assess Scholarship Applications. We could not do all the work without the help of our dedicated volunteers. As always, the quality of the applications are extraordinary, and reading them is a labor of love.

A big thank you to Casey Brown, RD who continues to work on articles for us, although extremely busy working at a hospital while everyone is dealing with the coronavirus. Upcoming in the Vegetarian Journal will be an article she has authored comparing the 'new burgers' like the Impossible and Beyond to some of the standard veggie burgers and homemade choices. To see articles like this, subscribe at: [ https://www.vrg.org/member/2013sv.php ]

VRG Research Director, Jeanne Yacoubou, commented on a VRG blog post. Re: a recent VRG blog title [since reworded] that said: "Once Coronavirus is Gone and Restaurants Reopen, You'll Find Delicious Veggie Food," coronaviruses, including covid-19, will never be gone. I would be remiss if I didn't say it. See the following for example. The last link ties the continual problem to intensive agriculture. Another argument against factory farming. [ https://www.vrg.org/blog/2020/03/19/coronavirus-animals-and-public-health/ ]

A dietitian who was retired, but called back to work at a hospital because of the pandemic, contacted VRG. She said she had spoken with our nutrition advisor Reed Mangels about 15 years ago, and Reed was one of the few people she could rely on for accurate information. She currently needed information for a vegan that was breast feeding.

We mailed out Veggie brochures to prison inmates in California, Wisconsin, Wyoming, New Jersey, Texas, Florida, Missouri, Indiana, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
