Vegan. Growing from a food truck to a brick-and-mortar that was awarded one of 50 business grants for small businesses led by Black and Latinx entrepreneurs, Black Leaf Vegan’s story is as big and bold as its flavorful menu items. With options of breakfast items, classic American comfort foods, and smoothies, there will be something to suit whatever you may be craving. Start your day with a hearty bagel breakfast sandwich of bacon or sausage, egg, and cheese (yes, all vegan), or go a little lighter with avocado toast or an oatmeal cup made with oat milk and sweetened with agave and maple syrup. Lunch and dinner options include the Crab-less Crab Cake made from a base of chickpeas, heart of palm, and vegetables, and the Guac Burger, served not only with guacamole but also their classic teriyaki BBQ sauce. And any time of day would be a great time for the Apple Pineapple Smoothie (a blend of apple, pineapple, and strawberry), or perhaps their Vita Verde Smoothie (a naturally sweet blend of spinach, dragon fruit, pineapple, and lemonade).

Vegan/American. Whether you’re the kind of person who likes pizza for breakfast or who prefers an all-day brunch, Fever’s Plant-Based Kitchen has you covered. One of their signature pizzas is the “Girl Mom” pizza, which is topped with spicy sausage, green peppers, onions, spinach, and a buffalo sauce. There is also the option to build your own pizza, with either a garlic butter or a marinara pizza sauce, topped with your choice from a variety of ingredients including mushroom bacon, vegan cashew cheese, artichokes, and sun-dried tomatoes. No pizza order is complete without wings—cauliflower wings in this case, served with your choice of honey mustard, BBQ, or buffalo sauce. Brunch selections include the Pancake Brunch Platter (3 pancakes, mushroom bacon, fried potatoes, and seasonal fruit). To switch things up a little, make sure to place an order on Tuesday, for the Taco Tuesday entrée—walnut and mushroom meat tacos with radish, lime, guacamole, tomatoes, and cashew cheese.

Vegan. For those who lament the difficulty of finding good vegan cheese, The Vegan Cheese Lady has come to your rescue. With a menu featuring made-from-scratch vegan meats and artisan cheeses, this café should be your go-to place. The cheeses are made from soy, cashew, or almonds and are all gluten-free. The meats do contain wheat. If you are looking for some simple cheesy goodness, try the classic grilled cheese. If you desire something a little heartier, there is Julieann’s Crunchy Wrap (made with smashed black beans, taco-seasoned vegan beef, vegan cheddar, and salsa and jalapenos), or the Chickun Salad Wrap (shredded vegan chicken with mayo, mustard, relish, bell peppers, and vegan cheddar wrapped in a tortilla). Dessert options may include a pineapple sorbet or a banana ice cream. Make sure to check the café’s Facebook page for menu updates and specials. They sometimes offer live music in the evening.

American/bar. This bar is accepting of all different types of diets. There are options for vegetarians and even a separate menu for vegans! The restaurant itself is casually styled and tastefully furnished. The food is American style with an interesting twist. They are a brewery as well, and make a lot of their own beers. I went straight to the vegan menu and zoned in on an all American Po Boy. The food was delicious and filling. I will definitely return to this ale house. The restaurant is located off of Lincolnway E., along the St. Joseph River.
