Vegan/juice bar. BARE Blends is proof that food can be both delicious and good for you, which is exactly the mission of this woman-owned juice and smoothie bar that is expanding franchises beyond its original location in Albany, New York. “Bare” may describe the fact that there are no added sugars or preservatives in its food, but the expansive menu of yummy smoothies, refreshing juices, and mouthwatering smoothie bowls is the exact epitome of bare. Menus have some variations depending on location, but examples include the Green Giant Smoothie (pineapple, orange, mango, kale, lime, matcha, ginger, and oat milk); the Tickled Pickle fresh juice (ginger, pineapple, cucumber kale, and lime); and the Banana Cream Pie smoothie bowl, which has a base of banana, cashew cream, and oat milk, topped with banana, plain granola, coconut, golden raisins, and cashew cream. They also offer waffles with toppings and meal-sized salads that can be made into a grain bowl with the addition of whole grain brown rice. And if you’re needing a pick-me-up, grab a coffee and protein blend, such as the Vanilla Coffee Blend, made with coffee, cashew cream, vanilla protein, and oat milk. Let’s hope that BARE Blends continues to grow, because every state in the country needs at least one!

Take advantage of the free street parking and then be prepared to enjoy comfort food that reminds us that vegans can have our cake—and our burgers, fries, and milkshakes—and eat them, too. Whether you are seeking comfort in its truest sense—think Loaded Fries, Mac N’ Cheese, or a Wild West Beyond Burger—or you are grabbing some greens in a Thai Tofu or a Summer Spinach salad, Strong Hearts Buffalo has something for everyone. You may very well be distracted from the food, however, by the number of milkshake options. It is no wonder they need a “Master of Milkshakes” on staff, to serve up their tasty concoctions including Orange Julius, Maple Vanilla Oreo, and Cookie Dough Espresso.

Vegetarian/café/bakery. This restaurant uses honey in some itemss and otherwise is vegan. With its cafes offering a moment of Zen amidst the bustle of New York City life, the thought and intention behind Matchaful’s “farm-to-whisk” matcha elevate this Japanese drink from a unique coffee alternative to an experience that will ensure you never look at a cup of tea the same again. There are several ways to enjoy their matcha, from the more classic Matcha Au Lait (matcha with water and plant-based milk) or Cold Foam Matcha (made with oat or almond cold foam and maple), to the more creative concoctions, such as the Fountain of Chai, made using house made chai, reishi, maple, vanilla, cinnamon, and oat milk. Matcha also makes its way into some of their smoothies, like the Emerald Sunrise Smoothie, which also includes almond milk, hemp seeds, cacao, cacao nibs, dates, and flaxseeds. To add more sustenance to teatime, Matchaful also offers a range of yummy pastries and snacks, including donuts (flavors include Matcha, Yuzu, and Chocolate Pistachio), a matcha brownie, parfaits like the Matcha Sunflower Butter Oats Parfait, and the Earth Glow Soft Serve (which includes cashews, oat milk, taro, and blue spirulina). For those who can’t completely abandon the coffee habit, they also have a small selection of coffee drinks, including a mushroom cold brew and lattes and cappuccinos. With matcha offerings like these, though, even hard-core coffee drinkers may find themselves craving a green pick-me-up.

If it’s a Salad Day, two of many options are Green Mango (Yam Ma-Muang) with a slightly sweet-spicy sauce, crowned with peanuts or cashews or Green Papaya Salad (Som Tam) with chili, tomato and roasted peanut in a tangy sauce. Both contain carrot, lime, and cilantro. So many soups, such as Cinnamon Soup (Pah Loh) Chinese-Thai soup with carrot, mushroom, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and cinnamon, or Tom Yam Spicy sour soup offering bok choy, tomato, coconut milk, kaffir lime leaf, lemongrass, galangal, chili, lime, and coriander. A few of many enticing entrées are Panang Curry (Gaeng Panang)—cumin-seasoned with coconut milk, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, onion, garlic, cabbage, and kaffir lime leaf, Haw Mokk Isaan—a thick Curry made with bamboo shoots, dill, carrot, garlic, onion, coconut milk, tofu, kaffir lime leaf, galangal, and lemongrass, with brown-red rice (Not gluten free) and Glass Noodles with Shitake Mushrooms (Op Wun Sen) featuring garlic, coriander, carrot, broccoli, ginger, black soy sauce, and celery.
