5) VRG HIGHLIGHTS

The Vegetarian Resource Group continues in our mission to provide up to date information on all things Vegan. We are dedicated to responding to everyone that asks. Requests come in from all over the country.

In January a Senior Producer at Nevada Public Radio contacted us for poll information. We assisted a reporter from U.S. News and World Report and provided information to incarcerated individuals in Arizona and Virginia who are interested in vegetarianism.

VRG volunteer Marcy Schveibinz did a Vegan cooking demo at the DePaul House Baltimore, Maryland for a group of about 15 residents of the low-rent senior community.

On January 21, 2020 Marcy Schveibinz along with a University of Maryland Intern for a Day taught another Vegan cooking class at Our Daily Bread in Baltimore City to a group of men residing and working through Christopher Place. Christopher Place is an intensive residential employment program that provides education and training, as well as recovery support, to formerly homeless men of the Baltimore area.

The VRG each year awards $20,000 in college scholarship money and entrants have already started to come in and volunteers have already started reviewing the applications.
We encourage all interested High School Seniors to apply but hurry, the deadline for submissions is February 20, 2020. See more information here: [ http://www.vrg.org/student/scholar.htm ]

We mailed out Vegetarian Journals to the Maine Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual meeting to place in bags for all their attendees, as well as six vegan books for door prizes and we also sent out kids material to Bradenton Street Fair in Florida.

VRG nutrition advisor Reed Mangels wrote for the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group newsletter an article with suggestions concerning how dietitians and dietetic students could get the most out of volunteering for nonprofits. There are many ways for current and future dietitians to promote vegan nutrition.

9) 2019 PRE-THANKSGIVING DINNER

by Emilio Gironda

On Sunday, November 24th, 2019 The Vegetarian Resource Group hosted our 38th Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Vegan Potluck Dinner in Baltimore, MD.

Imagine all of the camaraderie and food associated with the holiday without the turkey and fixin's. Imagine all that food - and it was all wonderfully VEGAN. Was this what vegan heaven looks like? It certainly represents a step toward heaven.

We encourage you to hold a similar event in your home town this year. Of course the internet has loads of vegan recipes but here are a few more: [ https://www.vrg.org/recipes/vegan_thanksgiving.php ]

18) INDIA'S ECO-FRIENDLY VEGAN COMMUNITY CAFE

Kolkata, India, the 'City of Joy,' has a new Vegan Cafe named Ubuntu. The story behind the name of the Cafe is also a statement of the philosophy behind the establishment.

There was once an anthropologist who had been studying the habits and culture of a remote African tribe. One day, he put together a gift basket filled with delicious fruits from around the region and called the children together for a small race.

The man drew a line on the ground, looked at the children and said, 'When I tell you to start, run to the tree. Whoever gets there first, will win the fruit basket.' As soon as the race began, the children held each other's hands and ran to the tree together.

They then sat under the tree and enjoyed the fruits together. Shocked, the anthropologist asked the children, 'Why did you go together when one of you could have the entire fruit basket?'

A young girl looked up at him and said, 'How can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?' and this is called spirit of UBUNTU which means 'I am because We are.'
