1) NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
We thank all our readers who are contributing to a better and more positive world. May you all have a Happy New Year. For those that are ill, we wish you healing. And for those healthy, we hope you continue to experience good fortune.
We've been so busy, we just noticed this was the 25th year of this newsletter. Thank you to all the volunteers
who worked on this media during the past quarter century. We especially thank Bobbi Pasternak, RN, and Brad Scott
who started our internet outreach. Here was the first issue of this newsletter from 1996: [ https://www.vrg.org/vrgnews/96dec.htm ]
And thank you to Jason Goretzki who in spite of a crazy year, was able to mail out the newsletter, often at 2 in the morning.
In the news lately has been reports of animal-free dairy products not taken directly from cows, but produced by
microorganisms possessing cow-derived genetic material. Because some may be genetically identical to cow's milk
there are warnings that people with cow's milk allergies should avoid these producs.
We would like to know if readers would consider these products vegan, though not taken directly from cows. Email your thoughts to [email protected]

3) NEW EDITION OF DIETITIAN'S GUIDE TO VEGETARIAN DIETS PUBLISHED
By Reed Mangels, PhD, RD
A 4th edition of The Dietitian's Guide to Vegetarian Diets has just been published. It's a great resource for dietitians, nutritionists, and other health care professionals as well as students in these areas. As a contributor to this book, I can confirm that this edition has been extensively updated. It includes 4 new chapters - Carbohydrates, Vegetarian Diets and Bone Health, The Vegetarian Athlete, and Strategies for Working with Vegetarian Clients.
The book includes summaries of the most recent research on health benefits of vegetarian (including vegan) diets in prevention of heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and diabetes. It discusses important nutrients for vegetarians and provides lots of sample menus, lists of good sources of nutrients, and other information that will be helpful for those seeing clients who are interested in vegetarian diets. There are five chapters with updated information on use of vegetarian diets throughout the life cycle which include details about nutritional assessment of vege tarians at various life cycle stages. Chapters on soy foods and phytochemicals include lots of new research. For more information, see the publisher's website. [ https://www.jblearning.com/catalog/productdetails/9781284211108 ]
