VRG's Nutrition Advisor Reed Mangels, RD, PhD will be presenting a webinar on the health benefits of a vegetarian/vegan diet for the San Jose Public Library, California this spring. FEEDING VEGAN FOOD TO THE NEEDY
During these hard times, vegan restaurant Land of Kush is graciously giving vegan meals to various food programs in Baltimore. Each meal is $5 to $15. Once they reach a goal of $500 they can distribute a minimum of 50 meals. This supports a vegan restaurant and those in need, as well as promoting a healthy and ethical vegan diet to new audiences. You can donate at [ https://www.vrg.org/donate ]
and write in the comments section "For Land of Kush Vegan Food Program". We'll then pass on the money and help sponsor a vegan community meal.
What we wear, eat and use in our everyday lives has an impact on both humans and animals. On Tuesday March 9, join VRG's Senior Editor Rissa Miller for a FREE panel discussion about Compassionate Consuming, sponsored by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and Pittsburgh Vegan Society. She is one of several panelists speaking that afternoon, and if you have any interest in learning more about plant-based eating or the effect of consumerism on animal lives and the food system, please stop by over your lunch hour.

10) TAX PLANNING FOR 2021
If you are 72-years-old or older these is important tax news regarding IRAs. If you choose to send any of your annual required minimum distributions (RMD) from your IRA directly to The Vegetarian Resource Group, you can withdraw the amount tax-free, subject to certain rules and limitations. Since the RMD rules were suspended for 2020, you may have decided that there were no tax planning reasons for you to take a tax-free qualified charitable distribution (QCD) for 2020. But 2021 may be different. If the suspension of RMDs is not extended, here are some options for 2021:
- Make "catch-up" QCDs from your IRA equal to what you would have given in 2020 had RMD rules not been suspended.
- Use a portion of your 2021 $100,000 QCD allowance to take this tax-free IRA withdrawal now.
- Make your 2021 Charitable Gifts from your IRA later in the year.
- Combine IRA contributions made by QCDs in early 2021 and those made later this year to significantly reduce your taxable RMD for 2021.
Remember this is not tax, legal or financial advice You should always speak to your legal or tax advisor. To donate directly to The Vegetarian Resource Group, go to [ https://www.vrg.org/donate ]

11) LARGER CHARITABLE TAX BREAK FOR 2021
There's good tax news for charities and donors in the year-end spending package Congress passed. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act includes an above-the-line tax deduction for gifts of cash to charity of up to $300 for individuals and up to $600 for joint filers for 2021.
See here for more information: [ https://home.treasury.gov/policy-issues/cares ]

12) WISH LIST
As a non-profit, we can only take on new projects when we are able to get support from donors and our dedicated volunteers. Right now, we are seeking your support for the following:
- The deadline for submissions to our High School Scholarship is almost upon us and we need volunteers to help with the application process. Basically we need people to read essays and write short 3-4 sentence responses. Can you help by reading some scholarship essays for us? Beside helping us, the process provides a positive window to the future. If you can, please let our volunteer coordinator Emilio Gironda now at [email protected]. If you would like more info it can be found here: [ http://www.vrg.org/student/scholar.htm ]
-
- Have you wanted to make a gift in honor of a loved one, friend or colleague, but weren't sure which charities were vegan, pro-environment or pro-animal rights? Consider a donation to The VRG as a memorial for a loved one, or way to honor someone's actions with a living tribute. This is perfect for special occasions, such as a wedding, birthday, anniversary or retirement. We will send an acknowledgment to you and the giftee, and your kindness will support our educational outreach programs and help promote veganism [ https://www.vrg.org/memandhon.htm ]
