VEGAN Education
VRG's Nutrition Advisor Reed Mangels had an article for American Journal of Nursing accepted. It has a small piece about vegetarian diets that are mentioned and presented as a healthy choice. Dr. Mangels also assisted a dietitian in Denmark concerning references for vegan diets and kids.
Reed Mangels PhD, RD and Catherine Conway MS, RD spoke to hundreds of health professionals at our booth during the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics FNCE conference. We also had an outreach booth at the Maryland Dietetics in Health Care Communities conference. Marcia Pearson answered questions and gave out vegan information at Everett Community College Food Day in Washington State and Karen Peissinger tabled at the University of Buffalo (NY) Sustainability Fair. Former VRG intern Casey Brown (who just graduated with her nutrition degree from UMD) and is doing her internship towards her RD credentials, had a booth for VRG at the NC Asheville VegFest. Former VRG intern Heather Francis did a VRG outreach booth at the New Jersey VegFest. Longtime volunteer (science teacher) Phil Becker represented VRG at the World Vegetarian Festival in San Francisco, CA. Elsa Spencer, PhD gave out information at the Charlottesville (VA) VegFest, Whitney Blomquist coordinated our presence at the DC VegFest (Mark Rifkin RD from Balanced Nutrition was answering diet questions), and Matt Baker RN helped scores of people at the Vegan SoulFest in Maryland.
Pearson Education is preparing for publication an educational textbook for higher education students entitled: Nutrition: From Science to You 4th Edition, by Stella Volpe, Joan Salge Blake and Kathy Munoz, and asked for permission to reprint VRG's My Vegan Plate. We responded to requests for information for a summer food service, a food bank, and a vegan diabetes book. We had requests for materials from a Home School, several VegFests, a Head Start, a Food Not Bombs chapter, an animal ministry, and a person needing Spanish materials for a service trip in Peru.
